Growing Up

Growing Up

PSHE gives children the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy, independent lives and to become informed, active and responsible citizens.

At Hillborough Junior School, we teach the subjects of PSHE and RHE (Relationships and Health Education) under the umbrella subject of Growing Up. We provide opportunities for our pupils and their families to participate in a wide range of activities and experiences across and beyond the curriculum, contributing fully to the life of the school and the wider community. In doing so they learn to be self aware, recognise their own worth, manage their own feelings, make and sustain relationships, work well with others and become increasingly responsible for their own learning. They are encouraged to reflect on their own experiences, and to understand how they are developing personally and socially. Children are given the opportunity to explore many of the moral, social, cultural and spiritual issues that are relevant to their lives.

Our pupils experience the process of democracy in school through the election of class representatives, who make up the school council. They are encouraged to voice their views, ideas and opinions through this process, thus making a positive contribution to the school community.

At Hillborough we have adopted the Sainsbury's School Games Values as our own and are working as a school to encourage our staff and pupils to keep these in mind every day. By doing this we hope that our children will learn to appreciate each other and grow up to be kind, compassionate and responsible members of society.

Values

Relationships and Health Education

Relationships and Health Education is now statutory (as of 2020). The new curriculum will be taught as before using a spiral approach which means topics will be revisited and knowledge developed. Each year will begin with a ‘Getting to know you’ week where pupils identify strengths and goals, develop a class charter and look at keeping safe (on and off-line). Throughout the rest of the year, other topics covered will include:

  • Healthy and happy friendships
  • Similarities and differences
  • Caring and responsibility
  • Families and committed relationships
  • Healthy bodies, healthy minds
  • Coping with Change
  • Basic first aid
  • Money

Lessons will be taught weekly and consolidated by workshops, visitors and drop-down days (such as Diversity Day). We are currently using resources supported by Discovery Education.
